PERFORMING HOLI: REDEFINING IDENTITY AMONG DALITS

How do you celebrate Holi?
Probably you know the way  we celebrate it in Kathmandu and in most cities of Nepal. There are other places where people celebrate it differently. They wear cultural dress called "Jhakuloa" and put 'tika' on their forehead. They put on garlands specially of marigold and perform this Holi. Jogbuda, that is in Dadeldhura district,so called Dalits celebrate it differently.
The time of Holi is the begining of spring season. We can see the buds and saplings appear and the air is romantic.Along with the romantic season the mixture of cultural dress evoked the beauty of so called Dalits and their art. When they perform Holi near Krishna temple in Jogbuda everyone comes to see this performance.
Everyone comes here to see the performance of so called Dalits. In fact so called Dalits are the performer of this festival here in this part of Nepal. They hold the power of it.So called high caste people just watch them performing Holi or they try their best to copy them(so called Dalits). When they failed to copy so called Dalits they cursed themselves and this is the interesting point to consider. So called high caste people trying to copy so called low caste.
In this festival so called Dalits sing songs from Holy books of Hindus;Ramayan and Mahabharat. So called dalits were not allowed to read these books, now they are performing on it.When so called high caste people come to see this it means they have accepted the hegemony/power of so called low caste people. So called Dalits are leading the society and they are power holder. This very idea redefines the identity.now so called Dalits are not inferior rather they are superior.
                                             let's  redefine the identity.
